* Taukkyant (Hraukkyant) - site of the beautifully-maintained Allied War Memorial Cemetry which pays tribute to 27,000 Allied Soldiers who perished in World War 2; 32 kilometres north of Yangon on the road to Bago. There is also an Allied Forces War Memorial Cemetry in Yangon and Thanbyuzayat (see below)

* Kalaw - a busy town in the Shan State - ideal for the adventurous with many trekking opportunities

* Kawthoung - at the extreme southern tip of Myanmar and a perfect place to start your journey through the Myeik Archipelago ("Mergui Archipelago") and on to Yangon and the north. If you like start your journey in Ranong just across the border in Thailand. Visit also the new Myanmar Andaman Resort in the pristine Myeik Archipelago - ask for further details of this ultimate in retreats and diving experiences

* Taunggyi - the Capital of the Shan State in the mountains near to Inle Lake which is a favourite destination - visit Aye Thar Yar winery the very first vineyard in Myanmar

* Thanbyuzayat - the Myanmar end of the infamous Thai-Burma Death Railway where there is the Allied War Cemetry with 3,771 graves of soldiers who gave up their lives in the construction of the railway in World War 2

* Lashio - a very busy trading center in the Northern Shan Mountains and one beginning of the famous Burma Road - and continue to the Chinese border at Muse
